Limited Edition Soft Toy: My elephant, my car:
Hamburg - The automobile industry has inspired the latest special edition of soft toys created by Andreas Linzner, the designer from Hamburg. His trademark elephant is now clad in upholstery fabric from various car models from the 70s and 80s - from Opel to VW. Most car lovers would normally think of technical details such as horsepower or speed when the topic turns to the VW Beetle or an Opel Kadett. Linzner, on the other hand, is only interested in the textiles used to upholster the car interior. Can you remember how car seats used to look? You probably remember how it felt to sit in the car on a hot summer day wearing shorts? All 26 cm of the stylish Car-Elephants are covered in evenly spaced dots or zigzag patterns, and are designed to appeal to the discerning fan of modern classics.
Andreas Linzner on his new collection:
Cars are a topic of great displeasure in the business world at the moment.
I have taken a long time in developing the idea for my next special edition. As always, I wanted to carry through the nostalgic theme that already plays a central role in my other towelling figures. The news is filled with reports about the car-scrapping scheme and the crisis facing the automobile industry on a daily basis. I was, in fact, getting tired of the subject when I realised that I could make something more cheerful out of it. After a great deal of research, I have found just the right vintage material for the job: car upholstery fabric! I will now be working with upholstery fabric that was originally used in various makes of car.
When I think back to my old VW Polo, I remember it as a place where I always felt comfortable - I could listen to loud music or smoke a cigarette whenever I wanted without disturbing anyone else. Over time, every car develops its own special smell that permeates into the seat covers. Every car interior has its own specific smell - one that is particular to the driver. My VW had a very special scent that is difficult to describe. When I think of car seat upholstery and my collection, I can virtually smell my old car!
I have picked the elephant for this edition - it has become something of a lucky charm and, let’s face it, it’s better suited to the more ‘macho’ car enthusiast. I also wanted to introduce a touch of irony into my work. Men are not typically fans of cuddly toys, but I find the combination of cars and soft toys very interesting and new. I have now created a few small series of elephants - an extremely limited edition. I hope you enjoy this special edition of “my elephat, my car“.
